Avon Maitland’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Literacy Development (ELD) Programs support young English Language Learners (ELL) from both Canada and countries around the world. The goal of the program is to ensure that all ELL’s are able to become academically fluent in English and therefore capable of succeeding in school and becoming positive contributors to Canadian society.
English as a Second Language and English Literacy Development
The English as a Second Language and English Literacy Development program uses a Supported Immersion model for educating ELLs; this means that all students are immediately immersed in regular, age appropriate classrooms where their program is adapted to suit their individual linguistic and learning needs until they reach fluency in English. Classroom teachers working with ELLs are assisted by special ESL Educational Assistants who provide special tutoring for the least fluent students that helps them to accelerate their language learning.
