Libraries Presentation
Branch Services Librarians Beth Rumble (Huron County Library) and Julia Merritt (Stratford Public Library/Perth County Information Network) made a presentation to the Board.
Together they reviewed the vast services they provide Huron and Perth and highlighted the many modern and traditional resources both their systems have available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“Libraries were not created to be a repository but a tool that people can use to improve their lives in whatever way they see relevant to them,” stated Merritt.
The Huron County Library and Perth County Information Network (17 libraries in all) provide digitized newspapers, Bibliocommons lists, hotspot lending, 50+ magazines and over 75,000 book titles. With community hub and innovation initiatives ongoing along with growing experiential learning opportunities, they have cultivated over 40 Community partnerships in the past year, including Avon Maitland.
This particular partnership, called the ‘KIT Card Project’, was established in 2015 and continues today.
K.I.T. stands for Knowledge, Information, and Technology. The goal is to give a library card to all students with the belief that access to library resources creates more opportunities for students to improve their literacy skills and build positive community connections.
Having a library card allows students to access the download library at school, and gives them access to all of the library’s other resources.
Almost 6400 library cards have been issued to Avon Maitland students.
Both Rumble and Merritt emphasized that their systems are committed to matching library services to the needs of students. The Board responded by stating how important the partnership is and looks forward to expanding it further.
