North Perth Westfield Elementary, our newest school in Avon Maitland, had its grand opening assembly on October 28th, 2016.
NPW is the amalgamation of the former Wallace Public school and Listowel Central Public school.
The assembly began with a written message from Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter (read by Jean Stacey), followed by speeches from AMDSB Board Chair – Colleen Schenk, MPP Perth Wellington – Randy Pettapiece, Mayor of North Perth – Julie Behrns, CAO of North Perth – Kriss Snell, AMDSB Superintendent – Janet Baird Jackson and Architect Terry Marklevitz, followed by closing remarks from Principal Kathy Boyd.
Following the assembly was the unveiling of the official plaque which can be seen on display near the front entrance of the school. The plaque honours the individuals who first conceptualized the creation of the school back in 2011.
“I think it’s a true lesson on how our community works together, that we can stand in something that we thought only as a dream, and now is our reality,”Mayor of North Perth, Julie Behrns
Amalgamations are a difficult process, especially for students who have built strong memories and relationships at their former schools, but, based on the mood of the students at the ceremony, these changes have not only brought more opportunities for them to learn and grow but has gathered together more friendships for them too.
“Congratulations to the staff, and to the students. It is time to make new memories.”
